Lions lick friendly foes in Know' Bowl 2000By Matt Pranger The San Juan Lions Club team, boosted by Howard "20th Century Man" Schonberger's decades of smarts, scored 360 points in the second half to win the Knowledge Bowl last night in the San Juan Community Theatre. "We had knowledge, experience and seniority," said Lions Capt. Richard Baker, which also included Minnie Knych and Lisa McCormick. "We have to give the credit to Howard. He's got that deep well (of knowledge)," Baker added. The Lions' captain plans to often recall the victory for his wife, Victoria Baker, a Kiwanis who also competed in the brainteaser. Friday Harbor High School's Freshman/Sophomore team of Colin Hamilton, Kelsea Peterman, Zac Williams and Reuben Silverman finished one correct answer shy of a victory, scoring 525 points. The other scores, teams and members are:
The trivia squads kept the competition light-hearted by offering some humorous answers, including: "Call A Friend"; "Ask The Audience" and "Will Buy Lunch for Judges Next Tuesday." While the Lions can take pride in keeping the travel trophy until next year's bowl, the big winners are students: San Juan Public Schools Foundation expects to raise about $10,000 from the fund-raiser, said Herb Meyer, foundation board president. Jim "The Ringer" Gimlett, after too great of success in last year's bowl, was promoted to judge. Bill Morrissey and Friday Harbor Middle School Principal Court Bell also officiated. Quinn Gillespie kept score and Larry Wight ran the clock. Chris Wisniewski also left the theater a winner, he won a weekend getaway to Roche Harbor Resort in a raffle. Robin Jacobson commended foundation underwriter Rock Island Communications and the teams sponsors -- San Juan Lions Club, InterWest Bank, Soroptimists International of Friday Harbor, American Legion Hackett-Larson Post No. 163, Kiwanis Club of Friday Harbor and Islanders Bank. She also thanked the many question sponsors, San Juan Community Theatre staff and the audience. | |
