San Juan Breast Cancer Support Group Meets

Grant for transportation assistance for breast cancer patients renewed

posted 02/26/04
San Juan County Health and Community Services has received funding to continue its Breast Cancer Treatment Support Mission Project, which provides travel support for breast cancer patients residing in the San Juan Islands and seeking treatment services on the mainland. The Puget Sound Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has renewed a grant to provide ferry tickets, mileage reimbursement and to support the development of air transportation. The transportation assistance is for doctor visits, surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, lymphedema treatments, etc., and continuing follow up that a patient may need during this calendar year.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation grant will also continue to cover travel expenses for low-income women served through the Breast and Cervical Health Program (BCHP) who are referred to out-of-county providers for mammography and diagnostic services. In the past year, a grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation made it possible for thirty five San Juan County women to receive ferry tickets to travel to the mainland for breast cancer treatment, follow up and mammography.

Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor is continuing to participate in the development of the project on San Juan, by organizing pilot and ground transportation. A network of volunteer pilots is in place on Orcas (Orcas Mercy Flights) and San Juan (San Juan Eagles) and is being developed on Lopez, to provide air transportation to mainland treatment centers. These pilots volunteer their time and planes to provide needed transportation to mainland cancer treatment appointments. Thanks to volunteer pilots, the added stress of travel time can be significantly reduced. Breast cancer support groups on Lopez and San Juan Island continue to be supportive of the project and its participants. Members are available as resource persons.

Anyone interested in participating in the Treatment Mission Project or the BCHP Transportation Project, or interested in more information, should contact Elaine Kendall, at San Juan County Health and Community Services, (360) 378-4474

For more than 20 years, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has been a global leader in the fight against breast cancer through its support of innovative research and community-based outreach programs. Working through a network of U.S. and international Affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cureā , the Komen Foundation is fighting to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by funding research grants and supporting education, screening and treatment projects in communities around the world.

The project will provide ferry tickets and mileage reimbursement.

The Soroptimists International of Friday Harbor has continued to participate in the development of the project by organizing the pilot and ground transportation 'Need-A-Ride' parts of the program. Travel support for breast cancer patients available

The San Juan Islands' Breast Cancer Support Group and the San Juan County Health and Community Services have developed a project to provide travel support for breast cancer patients residing in the San Juan Islands. A grant was submitted and has been approved by the Puget Sound Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for $16,850. Ferry tickets, mileage reimbursement and air transportation are included in the project.

The Friday Harbor Soroptimists are joining in the development of the project by organizing the pilot and ground transportation Need-A-Ride parts of the program. A network of volunteer pilots is in place on Orcas Island and is being developed on San Juan and Lopez islands, to provide air transportation to mainland treatment centers. Thanks to volunteer pilots, the added stress of travel time is significantly reduced. Pilots can inquire about volunteering by contacting Vickie Thalacker, 360.378.4578 or Jackie Armstrong, 360.378.1334.

Thanks goes to Scout Waite for starting the Friday Harbor Breast Cancer Walk: "We want our islanders to know that through their efforts (either walking or being a sponsor) the money raised is coming back to us in the form of this grant. Of course, we will need to keep walking and sponsoring so our grant will continiue to be reimbursed!" In 2000, the first annual walk raised $13,000. The 2001 walk exceeded its goal and raised $21,000.

The San Juan Islands Breast Cancer Support Group is made up of women from Orcas, Lopez and San Juan Islands that meet the first Tuesday of each month for lunch in Friday Harbor. The gatherings provide a means for sharing of information and a forum for open discussion. This facilitates an atmosphere in which all gain strength and support from being with other women who have been through a simular experience. This group held its first meeting in January of 1997. Members are available as resource persons regarding the following: Breast Cancer Reoccurence, Visualization, Meditation, Positive Self Talk and Methods of Relaxation as well as High Dose Chemotherapy.

The contact person for information regarding the Support Group or the Treatment Mission Project is Jude Marracci, 360.378.8305. Messages may also be left with JoAnne Campbell at the Health and Community Services Department, 360.378.4474.

Sun shines on the walk for a cure

Twenty of the participants in San Juan Island's second annual breast cancer walk sported pink t-shirts and hats signifying they were cancer survivors. One of the survivors walked the 10-mile segment which began at the arch at Roche Harbor Village. The two-mile walk started at Carter Beach.

The walkers converged at Sunken Park in Friday Harbor. Blossoms flower shop handed out pink roses to the cancer survivors. The event ended with a parade from Sunken Park to the Medical Center.

A final tally of the funds raised for cancer research will be available by the end of the year. Preliminary estimates which don't include the pledges or the donations from the 10-mile walk total $11,000.

Organizer Scout Waite was pleased with the turnout. "It's for the survivors and it's for a cure," she said.
