The "Trails Passport" is a booklet conceived to promote the use of trails on San Juan Island. After a family hike, users place a sticker on the trail's place in the book. The Trail Passports, funded by Island Rec's San Juan Trails committee, were designed by Dave Zeretzke and Chris Brown.

The small blue booklets can be picked up from Mike Biggers at Friday Harbor Elementary School or between 1 to 5 p.m. at Island Rec's office at Guard Street.

The idea started after Eileen Drath noticed Volks Walkers, a German hiking club, had Volks Passports for adults to record hikes. Zeretzke and Drath envisioned the Trails Passport as a way to introduce San Juan young people to forest and beach adventures.

Atlas Story Dickson, son of  Rob and Jessica Dickson was born December 13, 2011. He arrived ten weeks early with a virus called Cytomegalovirus or CMV. He weighed in at 1lb 14 oz and was 14" long.

The family is in great hands at the NICU at Providence Hospital in Everett and Jessica reports that Atlas is improving every day. Rob works for Ravenhill Construction on San Juan Island and was able to scale back his hours in order to travel south every weekend to help with their daughter, Seven, and visit Atlas every week.

A large insurance deductible for Jess, big travel expenses for Rob, and missed work for both are adding up quickly. While we can't do much to help speed up Atlas' exit from the hospital, we can help alleviate a little bit of stress for this wonderful family.

If you’d like to help, please contribute to the Atlas Dickson Get Well Fund at Wells Fargo Bank.

Checks may be made out to Atlas Dickson Get Well Fund or to Rob or Jess Dickson. Please mail checks to Wells Fargo Bank, PO Box 189, Friday Harbor WA 98250.

The Dickson Family thanks you with great appreciation.

Plans are just beginning for the 22nd San Juan Island Children’s Festival scheduled for May 5, 2012 and committee members are needed to help with planning, organizing and coordination of this festival.

No special skills are necessary, other than the willingness and time to work as a team committed to creating a fun filled festival dedicated to celebrating children.   With the exception of the festival day itself, committee members volunteer roughly 6-8 hours per months beginning in January.

Contact Sally Thomsen, Recreation Director at Island Rec at 378-4953 or play@islandrec.org to learn more about this volunteer opportunity!

The Children’s Festival is an annual island wide event where over 30 community groups gather to celebrate children by providing entertaining, creative, interactive, educational and playful activities for them.  It is supported by numerous businesses and organizations and is coordinated by Island Rec.

"The Children’s Festival is an entire community effort and is second only to the county fair in its scope of community participation and the number of people who attend," stated Thomsen, "and it is the commitment of the dedicated volunteers on the Children's Festival Committee who bring the festival to life every year."
