Marilyn and Les LaBar become the sixth recipients of the annual award honoring contributions to aviation on San Juan Island during a ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28 at the Roy Franklin Terminal, Friday Harbor Airport.
Marilyn (now Marilyn Nasman) and Les started Aeronautical Services in the early 1970s, which was, and still is the package lifeline to the mainland. As a contract carrier for UPS, its beginnings included an extremely small staff of hard working people. If you were sending a package from Friday Harbor to East Sound, it may have been picked up, flown and hand-delivered by the same person.
Those of us who remember Aeronautical's big blue Otter airplanes were very thankful for the great service (and the magnificent sound of those big radial engines).
The San Juan Aviation Museum, started under the leadership of Dr. John Geyman, is a joint project of the San Juan Pilots Assn and the Port of Friday Harbor. Previous honorees have been Roy Franklin (2008), Marty Stewart (2009), Bob Nichols (2010), Dr. Malcolm Heath (2011), and Frank Brame (2012).
