Both lanes of the I-5 bridge spanning the Skagit River between Burlington and Mount Vernon collapsed just after 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23. Three people were pulled from the water and taken to the hospital. As of 10 p.m. there were no fatalities.
The bridge was built in 1955. It is rated functionally obsolete. WA State Dept of Transportation says a semi-truck with an over-sized load hit a beam.
The section of the interstate is between the George Hopper and College Way exits.
