Friday Harbor High School track team hurdler Willie Blackmon took a hard fall on the next to last hurdle in the preliminary race at 1A Tri-District Championship Meet last week. Before the crowd was even able to gasp, he was on his feet again at top speed and finished third place qualifying for the finals.
Two days later in the finals, he took an early lead and never let go. He won first place and is the 2013 300m Men's 1A Tri-District Champion.
His next race is at the state meet May 24 at Eastern State University in Cheney.
The top six places in the finals move up to the state meet.
The girls 800 relay team - Robyn Roberts, Lita Gislasen, Alaina Scheffer and Genevieve Gislasen - executed near perfect hand-offs but failed to qualify for the finals. Though two of the relay runners, Lita and Robyn, are graduating this year, the group's hard work and dedication will live on through Alaina and Genevieve next year.
This was senior Robyn Roberts first, and last year to compete in Track & Field. In her short time on the team she managed to break Charlotte Hudson (Hart)'s 1979 800m run record AND Stacy Sorenson's 1981 1600m (mile) record. While Robyn was unable to move on to state, she did manage to break her own 1600m run record by another 3.1 seconds in the finals.
Our other senior, Lita Gislasen, ran in the 400m finals. Lita, who has been fighting some painful knee inflammation this year, managed to finish in a very tight pack in 8th place.
