The February 12 primary election for the new three-member council narrowed the field to Lovel Pratt and Bob Jarman as the candidates for Residency District 1 and Lisa Byers and Rick Hughes for Residency District 2. Hughes and Jarman are current council members.
Mark Forlenza in District 1 and Greg Ayers in District 2 were defeated.
The results by island show Byers and Hughes almost evenly splitting their home island 909 to 804 respectively. It was a similar situation with Pratt and Jarman on San Juan Island 1111 to 1063 respectively.
On San Juan Island, Hughes and Byers votes totalled 1808 with Byers taking 62 percent. On Orcas Jarman's and Pratt's votes totalled 1387 with Pratt taking 64 percent.
Lopez Island voters as expected cast their ballots overwhelmingly for Byers and Pratt. Both candidates were endorsed by the local Democrats who conducted a phone bank 'blast' during the mail-in primary. The vote count was Byers 719, Hughes 154 and Pratt 752, Jarman 266.
Of course all of those figures leave out the votes cast for the two defeated candidates, Forlenza and Ayers. The outcome and closeness of the April 23 general election will depend on voter turnout and where Forlenza's 1113 votes and Ayers 1456 go.
