Washington State Ferries advises customers to plan for heavy traffic and long wait times during the Memorial Day weekend. There are a few changes to the schedule in the San Juan Islands:
Beginning Wednesday, May 1, 2013, through September 30, 2013, the peak season surcharge will go into effect for vehicles and drivers paying full fare on Washington State Ferries. Multi-ride products will not be affected by this seasonal increase in fares.
After a five-month hiatus for repairs the 188-car Walla Walla returned to service Friday on the Bremerton/Seattle route. The failure on Nov. 4, 2012 in one of the electric drive motors left parts of the ferry near the engine melted and charred. The Jumbo Class ferry was undergoing routine annual maintenance at Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility on Bainbridge Island at the time.
The San Juan County Ferry Advisory Committee (FAC) will be reviewing the fall ferry schedule at its meeting on February 14 and will be considering suggestions for fall 2013. Comments are welcome either at the meeting or prior to the meeting via email to fac@sanjuanco.com. The fall schedule was in effect from Sept. 23 through Dec. 29, 2012.

Transforming the super-class ferry Hyak ferry into a hybrid vessel will save about $21.5 million over the remaining life of the vessel according to Washington State Ferries.

WSF to improve communications and maintenance procedures
SEATTLE – A three-month safety investigation recently concluded that human error was responsible for the failure of an electric drive motor that removed the 188-car ferry Walla Walla from service November 4, 2012. The incident had a system-wide effect on service.
The Vehicle Reservations System (VRS) Community Partnership committee, which is working on determining if a reservation system will work for the San Juan/Anacortes ferry routes, has made one decision. If a reservation system is implemented, reservations won't be used for eastbound Lopez service.
OLYMPIA – PRESS RELEASE: A new proposal by Rep. Jeff Morris, D-Mount Vernon, would provide funding for the construction of a third new ferry for the Washington Department of Transportation by making a required fee for small businesses applicable to government-run operations as well.
