SJI Library

Avatar_SJILibrary

Starting this week you’ll notice some changes at the Library, especially if you plan to search for information or check out library materials. We’re upgrading to a to a new information system to save money and make it easier for you to find our resources. The Library will close Monday, July 30th for the transition, and the online catalog may not be accessible from home that day. Ideally, we plan to launch the new system Tuesday, July 31.

We’re moving to a cooperative library management system through OCLC called WorldShare Management Services (WMS). The Library has been a member of OCLC for over 13 years primarily for cataloging and Interlibrary Loan services. With WMS, OCLC has connected the content, technology and expert capabilities of its member libraries worldwide to create the first Webscale, cooperative library management service.

One of the many benefits of WMS is the online catalog – WorldCat Local. You’ll find materials quickly and easily through this online catalog of resources. One search provides instant access to all our resources- digital objects, electronic materials, databases, eBooks, maps, journals, and books – in addition to materials at thousands of other OCLC member libraries worldwide. Those who like to borrow materials from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan will find the process faster and simpler than before. You won’t need to perform another search in the ILL database – if we don’t own the item, you’ll be able to request it through Interlibrary Loan right from the same screen.

We’ll be using both library systems for about a month during the transition to ensure accuracy of patron and item records. During this time, if you’d like to access your library account, you may have to access accounts in both systems for complete accuracy. Floyd is setting it up so that you’ll be able to easily access both accounts. But, dual access will only last about a month, so please bear with us during this short transitional process.

Staff has been through training, but we’re still learning the ins & outs of the new system. We appreciate your patience during this time while we continue to practice, explore, and experience the intricacies of WMS.

Please remember, the Library will be closed Monday, July 30th to transition to the new system. The regularly scheduled Yoga Workshop for teens will still be held in the Library’s meeting room. Please enter from the side door of the meeting room. If the migration goes well, we’ll have WMS up and ready July 31.

We’re excited for you to experience our new online catalog of resources and look forward to showing you how to access ALL our resources through one single search.

Credit Where Credit Is Due Saturday, 25 May 2013 Last Monday at lunchtime I passed out in a crowded downtown restaurant. Next thing I knew I was staring up at the face of an EMT who wanted to know my name, my birthday, and the day's date. I had been lucky because when I lost consciousness, I slumped against the wall on my left instead of falling to the right and bouncing on the concrete floor. I was seen at…

JUST SAY OOPS Sunday, 19 May 2013 Avatar_DavidBentley Have you heard the statement that anything worth doing is worth doing badly? It sounds really odd and seems to go against everything we've ever been taught. However, it makes good sense when you accept that it is important to allow yourself to make mistakes. Somewhere deep inside ourselves, no matter how much we strive to be perfect, we know that we learn from making…
