Stanley J. Soderbom age 84 passed away after a 7 month battle with cancer on November 13, 2012 in Bellingham, WA surrounded by his family. He is now resting peacefully in the Lords care. Stan was born January 31, 1928 in Omaha, Nebraska to Frederick and Florence (Zimmerman) Soderbom.
After being raised at Doe Bay, Orcas Island, WA, Ketchikan , Alaska , Anacortes, WA and graduating from Queen Ann High School in Seattle, WA he went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army, Korean War.
Upon returning home he met and married Virginia Ann Greene on February 14, 1953. They had five children together and were married 50 years.
Dad spent his years working at many different occupations including, but not limited to: Commercial Fishing, Machinist, Foss Tug, Part Owner of a Shipyard on San Juan Island, Delivering Oil on the Islands, Owning a Second hand store in Anacortes, Deck Hand on the Washington State Ferries and retiring as a First Mate for the Washington State Ferry System.
After retirement he worked as a handyman in Bellingham and managed a Storage facility in East Wenatchee. There is so much more that our dad did that it would take a month of Sundays to get all on paper. He was a very busy man with 5 kids to raise and provide for.
Dad taught us children the basics of life, good penmanship, math and good work ethics.
He made lifelong friends with whoever he came in contact with. (Too many to list, but you know who you are). He was a close friend to many and most of all a solid rock to lean on when times got tough.
Through all of the heart ache of losing our dad we have had so many people tell us how much they loved him and will miss him. In dads later years he took up crafting which included Making jewelry out of beads, making bird houses covered with polished rocks and whatever else he could find to create a piece of art.
After 84 years of lifelong memories (too many to list) it is with pride that all of his children will remember him as their strong, wise, awesome dad.
Stan is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 50 years Virginia A. (Greene) Soderbom, his sister Sylvia J. Soderbom, Grandson Robert Soderbom, Son in Law Ron McCoy and Daughter in Law Vicki L. Soderbom.
He is survived by his 5 children: Leonard (Cis) Soderbom, Loren Soderbom, Sharon (Jerry) Rouse, Shirley (Joe) Reilly, Leila Barker and 18 Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren and numerous Nieces and Nephews.
Memorial Services will be held on Monday November 19th 3:00pm at the Deming Log Show facility located at 3295 Cedarville Rd, Bellingham, WA 98226.
All who knew our dad are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers you may make a donation in his honor to Whatcom Hospice House, 2806 Douglas Ave., Bellingham, WA 98225. They were so wonderful in caring for our dad in his last hours with us. We will be forever grateful.
