There will be two opportunities on Monday, April 1, 2013 for the public to celebrate the national monument designation for the San Juan Islands. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Bureau of Land Management (BLM)Principal Deputy Director Kornze, Senator Maria Cantwell and Congressman Rick Larsen will be at the Anacortes event.
Home to bald eagles, orca whales, harbor seals and other rare species, the San Juan Islands is a chain of 450 islands, rocks and pinnacles. Located in Washington State’s Puget Sound, the archipelago provides an opportunity for visitors, campers, kayakers and birdwatchers to experience the natural beauty of the undeveloped, rugged landscape. A number of historic lighthouses are located on the islands, as well as cultural resources and fossils dating back 12,000 years. The monument will be managed by the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management.
Monday morning: Interior Secretary Salazar will host an event at the Anacortes Senior Center Great Room, 1701 22nd Street in Anacortes to celebrate the San Juan Islands National Monument. Check in at 9:30 a.m. Celebration and ceremony at 10 a.m.
As Salazar put it: "I look forward to seeing you on Monday morning to celebrate this great milestone that you all have been so instrumental in achieving. I regret that time and resource restrictions won't allow me to make it all the way to the San Juan Islands on this trip, but I look forward to spending time there, at one of our nation's greatest crown jewels, in the future. Neil Kornze, the BLM’s Principal Deputy Director is the lucky one who will represent me at the local celebration on the islands Monday afternoon."
Monday afternoon: A community celebration and potluck will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Lopez Center in Lopez Village. Representatives of the BLM, including Acting Director Kornze, will be there to answer questions. Included in the event are entertainment and food (bring salads, sides and desserts). Attendees can sign their names to posters which will be given to key officials who have helped obtain the designation.
