Fire station 41 on Lopez and Fire Station 21 on Orcas are open for 911 emergencies
UPDATED 6:07 p.m. CenturyLink has confirmed there is an underwater break between Lopez and San Juan Island. According to the county dispatch estimates are 24 to 72 hours until service is restore.
Cellphone service, all long distance land-line service, 911 calls on Orcas, Shaw and Lopez islands and some CenturyLink land lines county-wide are out of service.
Since 911 is out on Orcas, Lopez and Shaw islands, the Lopez Fire Department is staffing Station 41. The main station is at 2228 Fisherman Bay Road in Lopez Village. In case of emergency call (if you can) 468.2991 or go to Station 41 located at 2228 Fisherman Bay Road in Lopez Village.
For emergencies on Orcas Island call (360) 376-2331) or go to Station 21 on Lavender Lane in Eastsound.
The stations are able to contact dispatch.
Shaw Islanders should call 468-2991 (the number was transposed when first posted).
Before CenturyLink released the information, Steven K. Roberts of Lopez Island heard the radio traffic between CenturyLink crews.
This is the information he had: "The affected cable runs between Fisherman Bay and Pear Point, and it sounds like TDR or equivalent is showing break is about 5167 feet into the bay from the Lopez side (out of 10,000 approximate full distance). It is in the middle.
Amateur radio operator are also pitching in to provide communication.
