A man was hoisted aboard a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from shallow water near his grounded burning sailboat Tuesday, July 24. The man did not sustain serious injuries. The vessel burned to the water line.

210-kitASTORIA, Ore. — Thirteenth Coast Guard District's new Emergency Towing System, a pre-staged package of equipment that would be delivered to a disabled vessel requiring assistance, was tested by the Coast Guard and members of the commercial fishing and tugboat industry Wednesday, June 13.

The ETS program came into existence following the near grounding of the motor vessel Salica Frigo on March 9, 2007 in Unalaska Bay, Alaska, but Wednesday's exercise marked the beginning of its use in the waters of Washington and Oregon.

The Coast Guard medevaced an injured woman from a recreational vessel in the northern San Juan Islands Monday. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound, located in Seattle, received a request for assistance from the vessel Siesta at approximately 1:30 p.m., stating a 60-year-old woman on board had fallen and hit her head, suffering a severe gash to her forehead.

The Coast Guard rescues a man with his dog, June 14, 2012, after the two became stranded on a small island in the Coos River, Ore., approximately 3 miles east of the North Bend Bridge, the day before. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station North Bend hoisted the man and his dog to safety. U.S. Coast Guard video by Air Station North Bend.

Due to shallow water, Coast Guard Station Coos Bay was unable to reach the man who stated he was hypoglycemic, out of food, feeling weak and unable to refloat his 16-foot pleasure craft at high tide.
