San Juan Island Fire Department covers Brown Island, Pearl Island, the Port of Friday Harbor Marina, Roche Harbor Marina, Jensens Shipyard, Shipyard Cove, and the Friday Harbor Ferry Terminal in addition to San Juan Island with its numerous shoreline homes.

Fire Commissioner John Jensen is vehemently opposed to the department having a fire boat.

PRESS RELEASE Orcas Island Fire Dept: On Saturday, March 16, at 8:38 a.m., just as OIFR members were beginning to conduct recruit academy training for our 22 new members, we were dispatched to a fire in a guesthouse located approximately five feet from the main home located in the Sea Acres neighborhood.

Arriving personnel discovered the guesthouse to be “fully involved” in fire. All occupants had evacuated the structure, as well as the main residence. There were no injuries to civilians or responders.

Despite the serendipity of Orcas Island Fire and Rescue Captain Bob Nutt driving a fire department tanker truck Saturday afternoon (February 9, 2013) when he spotted smoke and flames coming from the Orcas Exchange, the iconic decades-old island recycling/reuse facility could not be saved. Nutt, who had been headed back to the station after training recruits all day, called for additional help and began firefighting operations.

When Nutt arrived at 4:48 p.m. there was significant fire involvement in the heart of the Exchange complex with flames extending to the trees in the area.
