San Juan County Council members unanimously approved the Council subcommittee's recommendation to award $1,400 Historic Preservation grants to each of the three historical societies and museums and $1,326 to the county Parks and Fair department (it is now one entity) during a special council meeting June 4.

Crow Valley School Museum will hold their opening from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Saturday May 26 at the historic school located just next to the north trail head of the Turtleback Mountain trail. Take Crow Valley Road from Eastsound, continue past Island Hardware and Supply and Coffelt's Farm and it's on the right before you reach Turtleback Farm Inn.

The start of the second phase of a barn expansion project has begun. The capital improvement project ncreases the size of a barn built on the museum grounds in 1985, which replaced the original nineteenth-century barn destroyed by fire in 1936.

The new wing will complement the Phase 1 wing which was added in 2005.

The annual Season Opening Party for the Orcas Museum takes place at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 25 at the museum North Beach Road in Eastsound right next to the Village Green. Festivities take place inside the Museum and - weather permitting - on the front walkway.

Included is live music, finger food and other refreshments. The public is encouraged to visit the Museum at no admission charge during the party.

A landscaping project - a 36-inch wide, 355-foot long path connecting several key historic structures on the San Juan Island Historical Museum grounds - needs volunteer workers.
