San Juan County Critical Areas Ordinance
San Juan County Council voted 5-1 to delay the implementation of the updated Critical Areas Ordinance until March 1, 2014.
San Juan Council member Jamie Stephens voted against the motion because he thought a December 1, 2013 date would be better for the construction industry. With the earlier date, builders and others in the construction industry would have certainty about the rules in time for the 2014 construction season.
San Juan County Prosecutor Randy Gaylord explained there was a difference between the council approving adoption and approving implementation.
Because the CAO has been approved by the council the new regulations are the county's valid Critical Areas Ordinance. However until they are put into effect - as of today that would be March 1, 2014 - the old code is the one the county uses.
