New rules adopted by the state Department of Health require all hospitals in the state to post on their websites and submit to the state, policies regarding patient access to reproductive health care, end-of-life care and nondiscrimination of patients.
The rule, which goes into effect January 23, gives the hospitals 60 days to comply with the new regulation.
The Washington State Hospital Association fought the rule changes claiming they were "burdensome." All the Catholic hospitals in the state are members of the association.
Under the new rules all proposed mergers, affiliations, partnerships or other relationships will be subject to state review as part of the Certificate of Need process.
How clearly the policies will be stated is not known since a format was not adopted by the DOH . At this time, someone reading PeaceHealth's policies may think all Advanced Directives are followed, when in reality only those that comply with the Church's teachings are honored.
