San Juan County Council members will make the final decision on the awarding lodging tax grants on Tuesday, July 16. The county Lodging Tax Advisory Committee reviewed applications and is recommending distributing $411,100 to 14 groups.
The committee recommended nothing be awarded to the Orcas Island Music Festival and the Friday Harbor Film Festival. A request by Lopez Tennis was denied because it did not meet the requirements. The state legislature Funding for capital improvements in facilities are allowed only for facilities owned or partially owned by public agencies.
The recommendations of the lodging tax revenue range from full funding to 16% of the requested amount. Requests totaled $583,027.
Lodging facilities collect a 4 percent additional sales tax. The county divides it into two funds. One goes through the LTAC. The other is paid to a Destination Marketing Organization for promotion. In San Juan County this is the San Juan Visitor Bureau.
The staff report and list of recommendations are posted on the county's website.
The council can change the amount of funding but cannot award anything unless an application was received by the LTAC.
