Body language tells it all
As the final groups approached the 9th green at San Juan Golf Club, I could tell it wasn’t going to be a good day. The sun was out, there was no wind and our golfers were walking with their heads down, looking like they had just been beaten up.
Maybe it was the sunshine or the lightening fast greens or perhaps the stars were in the wrong alignment. Whatever it was, the Orcas golf team was going to win our annual rivalry: Orcas High School 202, Friday Harbor 205.
The Orcas team was lead by Grage Parnell with a season best of 40, followed by William Coe at 41, Roo Smith with a 49 and first year player Zack Kosteko with a 72.
The Friday Harbor squad played fairly consistent, they just came up a few shots shy of the win. Riley Rousar is still fighting his chipping problem and posted a sad 49. Sophomore Xander Chriton posted a 55. All the rest of the team are first year players. Eli Baker followed the lead of “Three Club” Austin Cotton, lightened his bag to three clubs and almost broke 50 with a 51. Senior “3 club” Austin carded a 53. Freshman Keegan Hebert almost broke the magic number 50, carding two pars on his way to a 52. Jess Hargrove slipped to a 56 after taking a few days off to catch up on his homework.
Kendra Meeker didn’t play her usual game as the slick greens gave her a little trouble. She posted a 43 for the nine holes. Devan Rousar shot her usual 64 after three putting almost every other hole. Mara Nutt from Orcas posted a 68 as the only lady for their team.
We are two weeks away from post season play. These tournaments coming up are what we have been practicing for all season. At this point in the season, the best thing we can do is head for the putting green.
