Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife is pursuing a $1 million grant for enforcement of the boating restrictions related to killer whales in the waters around San Juan County. A representative from Rep Rick Larsen's office mentioned the grant during a meeting between local government officials, staff and staff members representing Governor Inslee, Senator Maria Cantwell and Senator Patty Murray this morning in Friday Harbor.

The NWFSC has been updating its web page  with new maps to show the track of K25, an adult male Southern Resident killer whale that was tagged on Dec. 29, 2012. As of February 16th, K pod was just north of Shelter Cove, California.

PRESS RELEASE: Seattle, WA—More than 136,000 concerned citizens have submitted comments opposing a California agribusiness campaign to take Puget Sound’s killer whales off the endangered species list. The comments are directed to the National Marine Fisheries Service which set a deadline of January 28.

NOAA Fisheries Service has formally accepted a petition from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to include Lolita, a killer whale captured from the Southern Resident population in 1970 and now at the Miami Seaquarium, in the Endangered Species Act (ESA) listing of those Southern Resident killer whales. These  orcas were listed as endangered in 2005.

NOAA Fisheries and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a one day workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 28 at Roche Harbor Pavilion to review the current vessel guidelines and regulations in place to protect killer whales in Washington.

Public News Service: SEATTLE - Today is the final day to comment on a petition to take a Pacific Northwest killer whale off the endangered species list. There are fewer than 90 Southern Resident orcas, popular mascots of the Puget Sound area. Two commercial farms in California say these whales are no different than any other type of orca and are therefore not scarce, however.
