Whales

Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife is pursuing a $1 million grant for enforcement of the boating restrictions related to killer whales in the waters around San Juan County. A representative from Rep Rick Larsen's office mentioned the grant during a meeting between local government officials, staff and staff members representing Governor Inslee, Senator Maria Cantwell and Senator Patty Murray this morning in Friday Harbor.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the impact of the collapse of the I-5 bridge on the San Juan Islands.

After that discussion, Town Administrator Duncan Wilson brought up the controversial "no-go" zone proposed by NOAA which he said the Town of Friday Harbor is strongly opposed to. He thought increased enforcement of the current regulations made more sense.

San Juan County Sheriff's Office may be sub-contracted to do the enforcement if Fish and Wildlife receives the grant.

The "no go" zone would have closed off portions of the west side to boating to protect the whales.
