A satellite-linked tag is attached to the orca known to humans as J87.
The tagging, done on December 26 by a research team from NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center, is a continuation of a 2011 project. The purpose is to understand where Southern Resident killer whales go in the winter, and their winter habitat use.
J87 is seen mostly with J pod, one of the three pods in the SRKW population. The other two pods are J and K.
The information gathered from this tag will address the data gap in winter distribution identified in the Recovery Plan, as well as provide information for future consideration of critical habitat designation.
