San Juan County District Court Judge Stewart Andrew will conduct the swearing-in ceremony for the new three member council at 8:45 a.m. this morning, May 14 in the Legislative Building at 55 Second Street in Friday Harbor.

This will be the fourth time, Bob Jarman and Rick Hughes have taken the oath of office since winning in the November 6 general election.

A correction has been made in the next to the last paragraph regarding other entities which use oblique photographs. We apologize for the error.

The contract to update the aerial photographs of the county which are six years old, was given the go-ahead by the county if certain conditions were met. They were, and the interim county manager signed the contract. Today, the county council directed IT Director Stan Matthew and Public Works Director Frank MuCahey to ask the aerial photography company for the money back.

San Juan County Council did not reverse their earlier decision regarding the update to the aerial photography. They had passed a motion giving the county manager the authority to proceed with a contract if the IT Director was able to obtain one-third of the funding from other agencies and buy-in from the Fire Department Association.

IT Director Stan Matthews met both requirements.

San Juan County Council Marc Forlenza suffered a heart attack Tuesday morning (April 2, 2013) and was flown to PeaceHealth Medical Center (St. Joe's) in Bellingham. He was flown back home at noon Thursday, April 4, 2013.

San Juan County Council will host series of open house meetings on Monday, May 13, 2013, to give residents a chance meet the top candidates for the position of County Manager. Islanders will be able to talk with the finalists for the job in an informal setting in sessions on Orcas, Lopez and San Juan Islands, and then provide feedback through the recruiting agency.

San Juan County Council six member Council has packed a lot into their last few weeks. A special session today deals with public comment on code simplification at 10 a.m. The meeting can be viewed live online.

Changes to the way fees are set for land use and building permits. will be discussed by the council at 11 a.m. Moving some procedures from the hearing examiner to the Community Development and Planning Department, which would reduce the cost, having the county general fund share more of the cost of staff time, overhead, and other costs with the applicant and not automatically exempting non-profits are topics for discussion.

Sheriff's office investigating Rosenfeld/Forlenza altercation

A heated discussion between San Juan County Council member Marc Forlenza and former Council member Howie Rosenfeld Tuesday, March 26 led to a call to the Sheriff's office dispatch. Assault charges by both men against each other are possible after the verbal confrontation.

The incident is under investigation.
