San Juan County Hospital District #1 Commissioners voted last night Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2013 to ask voters to approve a permanent EMS levy at the November 5 General Election apparently unaware the deadline has passed.
Ballot measures had to be submitted by August 6.
The deadline for the February, 2014 election, which is the next available date, December 27, 2013.
The Emergency Services Chief Jim Cole had suggested the February date, but the commission wanted to use the November 5 election as it most likely will cost less. Every entity is on the ballot pays for their portion of the cost. The cost for the February would be more as less measures will appear on the ballot.
Currently the EMS levy is put to a vote every six years. The move to a permanent levy would remove that requirement and would guarantee a consistent revenue stream for EMS making long-term planning easier.
