The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the following information pursuant to RCW 4.25.550 and the Washington State Supreme Court decision in State vs Ward, which authorizes law enforcement agencies to inform the public of a sex offender's release, when in the discretion of the agency the release of information will enhance public safety and protection.

This story has been changed to correct the status of the necessary parties. 

Skagit County Superior Court Judge John Meyer enjoyed hearing the case challenging the validity of the three voter-approved Charter Amendnents as it is rare to hear Constitutional cases in Superior Courts. He complimented both San Juan County Prosecutor Randy Gaylord and the plantiff's attorney Stephanie O'Day for the way they handled the case. He promised his ruling, which will be written, well before the April 23 general election. The ballots are printed on March 15.

The February 12 primary election for the new three-member council narrowed the field to Lovel Pratt and Bob Jarman as the candidates for Residency District 1 and Lisa Byers and Rick Hughes for Residency District 2. Hughes and Jarman are current council members.

Mark Forlenza in District 1 and Greg Ayers in District 2 were defeated.

The results by island show Byers and Hughes almost evenly splitting their home island 909 to 804 respectively. It was a similar situation with Pratt and Jarman on San Juan Island 1111 to 1063 respectively.

Maddie Overnell is San Juan County’s new Fairgrounds and Events Manager, and County Parks and Fair Director Dona Wuthnow says that Ms. Ovenell has a clear challenge ahead of her. “The top priority is making the both Fair and the Fairgrounds sustainable as long term community assets.” The new manager officially began work on January 7.

Press release: Speaking from his hospital room, County Councilman Bob Jarman quipped, “I’m putting my whole heart in the job of Council and I needed a tune-up”.

Jarman and his wife Sue got a surprise when he visited his physician for routine tests, and discovered he had a faulty heart valve. He is now recovering from surgery with a new mechanical valve.

Common Sense Alliance (CSA) petitioned the Growth Management Hearings Board for review of the San Juan County Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO) on Monday, February 4, 2013. The CAO was adopted by the San Juan County Council on December 3, 2012. Sandy Mackie of Perkins Coie LLP is representing Common Sense Alliance in this matter.

On February 3rd, 2013 at approximately 1920 hours deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover crash in the 600 block of Raccoon Point Road near Eastsound on Orcas Island. The vehicle operator, the lone occupant, was treated at the scene and flown by Airlift Northwest, to PeaceHealth Medical Center in Bellingham. The driver’s condition was stable at the time of the airlift. The incident remains under investigation.

The update to the Shoreline Management Plan is due June 30, 2013. The state Department of Ecology has provided grant funding to the county to cover the costs of this mandated update. Funding not used by the deadline must be returned. 

Tuesday, January 29 county, the council approved 5-1 a motion, made by Council member Rich Peterson,  pushing the project out past the deadline and funding.
