Senate Bill 5262 and House bill 1253 regarding the use of lodging tax funds are similar except the Senate bill removes capital expenditures as an authorized use. Both clarify that the funds can be used for special events and festivals designed to attract tourism.

At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 26 San Juan County Council has scheduled a discussion of the process and timing the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee uses for its Request for Proposals. The LTAC decides how to distribute the revenue collected through a 2 percent lodging tax. For 2013, they recommended allocating a total of $350,000 to seven groups or organizations. Five percent went to new activites.

Applications are now being accepted for a total of $350,000 in San Juan County Lodging Tax tourism grants. The county's Lodging Tax revenue increased by nearly 8% in 2011, compared with the previous year. That enabled the County to match the amount available for grants awarded last year while still adding to the fund's cash reserves.

A discussion on the Lodging Tax grants will be held 9:10 a.m. Tuesday, June 12. A total of $514,819 in requests were received in response to a request for proposals issued this spring. $350,000 in Lodging tax funds were available.

The county collects two 2 percent lodging taxes. The total is approximately $700,000.

It's budget-setting time for some and grant-awarding time for others. The two are linked for county tourism-related businesses/groups and the citizen Lodging Tax Advisory Committees.

While roles of the LTACs are advisory, both the town and county councils tend to follow their recommendations. The county council did restore some funding for 2011 to the county Fair over the objections of the county LTAC. Otherwise both councils are very reluctant to go up against their respective committee.
