A collaborative effort by San Juan County Sheriff Rob Nou, U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, the Department of Homeland Security, the Captain of the U.S. Coast in Seattle resulted in a $789,000 grant to build a public safety boat for the county.

Lack of cooperation by the local fire and EMS agencies may result in an opportunity lost.

A 47-year old Bellingham man told crewmembers he was having difficulty breathing as he ascended after diving for sea cucumbers in Griffin Bay this morning (May 9). He collapsed, resuscitation efforts by crew and rescue workers were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at Jacksons Beach on San Juan Island.

"I rarely if ever see police officers patrolling," said a mother frustrated after seeing adolescents and 20-somethings using drugs at the skate park. "What should I do when I see it, call you?" she asked Sheriff Nou at last night's Town Hall meeting about Drugs, Domestic Violence and DUIs.

"Yes," he said. "We need all the eyes and ears out there."

Her response a bit later in the meeting. "It's not my job."

Cross Road on Lopez Island was closed down for five hours Saturday afternoon until regional bomb squad members from Snohomish County could render an explosive device safe. Lopez firefighters and San Juan County Sheriff deputies evacuated the immediate area and closed the roadway when the device, made from a collection of “safe and sane” commercial fireworks altered to manufacture a homemade bomb, was discovered in a mailbox.

On April 23, 2013 the Sheriff’s Office received reports from Friday Harbor residents about a possible scam to obtain personal identifying information.

A caller, representing himself as being from Medicare, attempted to “verify” person information, including name, address, and social security number, under the guise of sending out new Medicare cards.

A 28-year-old Friday Harbor man will be arraigned at 9 a.m. Wednesday March 13 in San Juan County Superior Court on three counts of delivery of cocaine. He allegedly sold the drug out of his residence at 195 Sunshine Alley.

On February 3rd, 2013 at approximately 1920 hours deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover crash in the 600 block of Raccoon Point Road near Eastsound on Orcas Island. The vehicle operator, the lone occupant, was treated at the scene and flown by Airlift Northwest, to PeaceHealth Medical Center in Bellingham. The driver’s condition was stable at the time of the airlift. The incident remains under investigation.

Sheriff’s deputies on Orcas Island are investigating two recent school burglaries, the first reported July 7 in the old Orcas Island gym and the other reported July 10 at the Elementary School.
