Following are updates on solid waste pertaining to all the islands in the county

Lopez Island: The solid waste facility will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th due to the holiday.

Tuesday, June 26, San Juan County Council approved an ordinance establishing a Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District and appointed a local management board. The operation of the district is dependent upon approval by the county council of their proposed operating budget and a vote for a property tax by Lopez Island voters.

The board plans to keep the Lopez drop box facility open with enhanced recycling materials recovery, as well as the regular garbage drop-off. Neil Hansen would be the sole employee in the otherwise volunteer organization.

Orcas Island: Proposals to operate the Orcas solid waste facility are due on July 13. The four groups eligible to submit proposals are: Cimarron Enterprises, the Exchange, KENTEC Energy USA and San Juan Sanitation. The Request for Proposals issued by the county did not specify what type of services would be offered at the facility.

San Juan Island: An RFP has not been issued yet. Talks are still underway with the Town of Friday Harbor regarding the lease of the town-owned site on Sutton Road. The county owns the facility which is under a DOE "drop dead" deadline to cease operations as of September 30, 2012. (see related story).

Shaw Island: Public Works Director Frank Mulcahy visited the recycling committee on Shaw to talk about route collection of recyclable materials and other upcoming changes in the system. Shaw Islanders, Inc. will be considering how the small island population will respond to the addition of recycling to route collection.

Other Islands: Mulcahy will visit hold community information meetings on other islands this summer specifically to meet people and answer questions about the transition. Times and locations to be determined.
