A bill has been introduced in the state legislature which would reduce educational standards, housing standards and building codes to accommodate seasonal agricultural activity. This would allow students to pick crops, farmers to save money and consumers to pay less for produce.

OLYMPIA – Jan. 6, 2012 – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announces that Martin Luther King Jr. holiday three-day weekend Jan. 14 through 16, will be the first of ten 2012 State Parks "free days", when the Discover Pass will not be required of visitors venturing out to enjoy their state parks. Most of State Parks free days are in alignment with 2012 free days offered by the National Park Service.

Senate Bill 5977, introduced in the state legislature December 7 by Senator Ranker (D-San Juan Islands),  would allow a Discovery Pass to be transferred between two vehicles. The language: The discover pass must contain space for ((the)) two motor vehicle license plate numbers.  A discover pass is valid only for those vehicle license plate numbers written on the pass.

State Rep. Jeff Morris, (D-Mt. Vernon) will introduce HB 2179 on January 9, 2012, clarifiying current law regarding objections to liquor licenses issued by local government to vest granting and objection authority to the legislative authority of a county, city, or town, rather than solely in the chief executive of a county, city, or town.

The bill has been prefiled.

OLYMPIA, Wash. - On this first day of the new legislative session, education is top-of-mind for Washington lawmakers. The state Supreme Court may have complicated their job when it issued.a ruling last week that Washington is not doing enough to fund its public schools.

OLYMPIA, Wash. - There are 8,500 fewer state employees in Washington than when the recession began - and in the State Parks Department, 160 more are scheduled to get pink slips to help close an $11 million budget gap in that agency. However, Tim Welch, director of public affairs for the Washington Federation of State Employees, says the new year will bring a different tone to the state legislature, as lawmakers get the message that another all-cuts budget may hurt more people than it helps.

State Sen. Kevin Ranker, (D-San Juan Island) will introduce Senate Bill 6016 concerning shoreline management on January 9, 2012.

It requires the Department of Ecology to submit a report to the Legislature by September 1, 2012, that includes a summary and update of actions being taken related to the Shoreline Management Act, along with any legislative recommendations.

PRESS RELEASE: As the state legislature's special session comes to a close in Olympia, Representative Jeff Morris (D-Mount Vernon) has volunteered to forego his per diem allowance. Rep. Morris will pay for his own expenses. This will save the House of Representatives and taxpayers $1,710.
