Soldier school 1860s style

Children will have the opportunity to experience the lives of soldiers in the 1860s during San Juan Island National Historical Park’s second annual School of the Soldier scheduled 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Sunday, August 8 at American Camp.

Although recruits of all ages are encouraged to attend, most of the activities are designed for children 8 years old and older. The day will be filled with folk music, games, marching, musket drilling and other activities. MORE INFORMATION

Summer Fun at Camp Eagle Rock

Looking for some day time summer fun for your children or visting grandchildren? Camp Eagle Rock delivers heaps of fun this year under the direction of Camp Director Dona Ryba! The weekly program consists of swimming at San Juan Fitness pool, arts and crafts, games, singing, special events, field trips and new this summer is fishing and archery.

Camp runs weekly through August 13 and is open to kids ages 6-12. Camp hours are from 8:30 am-3:30 pm costing $70 per child. The fee includes all camp activities and a daily snack.

For families who need extra care for their children after camp care is offered till 5:30pm. Scholarships are available to children who qualify for the schools free or reduced lunch program. There are still a few spaces available each week, but are expected to fill soon. 19th year for Ament's Summer day camp

Bill and Rita Ament offer a creative arts day camp featuring arts & crafts, dance, drama, swimming, games, music, singing and outdoor fun.

In its 19th year, the camp continues with a variety of themes: Native American Indian teachings and celebrations, plus learning the art of many old and new Dance styles and the acting.

The are four day camps offer range of age appropriate activities at the beach, forests, lakes and field. MORE INFORMATION


Pod Nods

Pod Nods return to The Whale Museum for marine science adventures on four Friday nights this summer: July 2, 9, 23 and August 13, 2004.

These popular "pajama parties" in the Museum for children ages 5-8 will be led by a Museum Educator Kendall Berry, with assistance from other adult professionals and college students. Youth participants will learn to value whales and their environment through art projects, science labs, music, games, and the traditional flashlight tour of exhibits.

Each date will have a different theme:

  • July 2, J Pod;
  • July 9, K Pod;
  • July 23, L Pod;
  • August 13, Superpod.

Each Pod Nod will begin at 6:30 p.m. with pick-up Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. Bedtime snack and light breakfast are included.

The cost for each Pod Nod is $35 for children/grandchildren of Museum members, and $39 for non-members. There is a $5 studio fee for July 23 when the group will make a special visit to the Hard Clay Café. A grant from the Friday Harbor Elementary School PTA has insured that scholarships will be available for qualified local children.

Activities for Kids at the Library

Regularly scheduled after-school activities take place on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at the San Juan Island Library. Mark your calendars for Game Days and Craft Days for elementary-aged children at 3:30 p.m.

In January Craft Day will feature the art and craft of sand painting. Come January 14 after school to learn how and to practice sand painting. Other craft programs have included making animals from pipe cleaners and learning basic origami. Come January 28 for Game Day-- a chance to play board games like Clue, Parcheesi, Boggle, I Spy and others.

Craft and Game Days are supervised by library staff or volunteers. Teens may supervise game and craft days to earn Dollars for Scholars volunteer credits or teens may apply for paid teen library assistant internship positions. Other library volunteer work such as shelving is also available to teens who want to earn Dollars for Scholars scholarship funds.

The Library's collection includes both fiction and non-fiction books for very young children, for grade-school aged children and for adults. In addition to its collections of books, audio books and videos to loan, the library also provides computers for the public use.

Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 AM to 8 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday from 1 PM to 5 PM. Library cards are free to island residents with proof of residency.

Bill and Rita Ament's Summer Creative Arts Day Camp takes place in July and August. The Whale Musuem offers four Pod Nods. The Missoula Children's Theatre comes to town July 14-19. Island children audition for Hansel and Gretel on Monday, rehearse all week and perform twice on Saturday. And Island Rec and Orcas Island Rec offer a variety of programs.

Blue Demons win Championship

The Friday Harbor Little League Blue Demons worked hard together and accomplished their goal of winning the 2003 Girls Softball Majors Championship. "This 5th and 6th grade team excelled way beyond my expectations," said Coach Greg Avery. The girls played their best on Saturday, June 7, 2003 in a double header against Anacortes winning the first game 11 - 4 and losing the second game 15 - 8 ending their season with a 10 - 1 record. Troop 90 snow camps

A few weeks ago, 15 Boy Scouts from San Juan Island Troop 90, four adults and the sister of one of the scouts bundled up and set out for an adventure in the snow at Mount Baker. Library hires teen assistants

With support from Friends of the Library, the library has hired its first teens in a new rotating position: Teen Library Assistant. The new position is a 15-week program for high school-aged students to gain work experience, participate in the community, and get paid for six hours each week.
