LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Supporting Howie Rosenfeld for county Council

Dear Editor,

posted 10/30/2006
I am writing to encourage the residents of Friday Harbor to vote for Howie Rosenfeld in the coming County Council election. Only town residents can vote for this new position.

I have observed Howie's participation on the Friday Harbor Town council for several years and believe he can be of real service representing town residents on the newly formed county council.

The tiny (1 sq, mile) area of Friday Harbor has only 2,200 residents, who often carry a considerable load on several issues that concern all county residents and visitors: parking, water, tourism, traffic, etc. We need a strong Friday Harbor voice on the new county council, someone who has dealt with those issues for years, and will not easily forget town resident interests after moving to the newly formed county council.

Instead of always bringing only a town or only a county perspective to our local governments, we have long needed someone to help all islanders work more closely together to achieve shared community goals. Howie, I believe, will be just such a person. Please join me in voting for Howie in the November election.

Howie Rosenfeld is a superb candidate for the County Council. Not only is he experienced in public office, but he has also proven himself to be open, honest, and intelligent.

Howie has shown a rare ability to express his opinions and to discuss issues in a mature manner. He treats everyone with respect, whether or not he agrees with them. By listening to other points of view and doing his best to accommodate them, his public service is free of the exclusivity and special interests that all too often color U.S. society and politics today.

The depth of Howie's understanding of the County is impressive. He has lived in these islands for 25 years. He cares about the people, the land, and the overall health of the community. As a member of the Town Council and numerous planning committees, his knowledge of both town and county government is extensive.

A vote for Howie Rosenfeld will benefit us all.

Having known Howie Rosenfeld for 25 years, I have found him to be thoughtful, intelligent, and most of all, open-minded.

Having listened to Albert Hall speak at several public meetings, and having read dozens of his letters to the editor for the last decade, I feel that Albert does himself a great disservice. He adheres to a close-minded and inflexible ideology that prevents him from using his intelligence, not only to ferret out the truth of a situation but also to look for creative solutions.

Even though the position for County Council for which Howie and Albert are both candidates can only be voted for by town residents, the position will greatly influence the entire Council. Howie will provide well-thought-out ideas using open-minded intelligence. Albert would, I fear, bring an inflexibile ideology that would obstruct solutions that do not fit into his narrow and often unreasonable point of view.

San Juan County needs Council members who can reach consensus. A vote for Howie Rosenfeld will be a positive step in this direction.
