STORY AND PHOTOS OF APRIL 10 TRIBUTE

Remembering Frank Wilson

Dear Editor,

posted 09/01/04
It was an honor to have played a small role in the life of such a respected man. Frank helped save my life, on more than one occasion, as he did many others during his years of service. He thought nothing of it. It was all in a day's work.

May God Bless Frank's family and Frank's community with peace as you mourn the loss of his quiet presence.

I look at all of the controversy spilling over about Purple Hearts and service in Vietnam. I do know one thing and that is that Frank Wilson received one Purple Heart but what he did with his life is what a true hero is all about. We all do things in the heat of battle and for some it is heroic but it is a fleeting moment in time. Frank did his duty and was wounded for it and when he returned he used his life to continue serving his fellow citizens with his own two hands.

It was not a fleeting moment in time but a lifetime of being a hero to a lot of us. That is what a true life-time hero is about not a momentary hero.

Thank you Frank...

While it has been many years since Nancy and I have lived on San Juan Island whenever I think back to our time on the island and my time with the fire dept I think of Frank Wilson. Being a fellow Marine and knowing Frank for so many years I have many good memories of working with him on Fire Dept and Legion events. Frank was a good man and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Janet and all of Frank's family.

With great saddness I read of this man's passing. We had many fine discussions about government, services and how to afford them. Certainly those who knew him, no matter how well or not, will miss him.

The End of an Era

Dear Editor,

08/26/04
My heart goes out to the families (both immediate and extended) of Frank Wilson. Frank was a hero to many people; including myself, on the island, a goal to which any of us can only aspire. He touched; as well as saved, many lives over the years. The people of San Juan Island have the extraordinary EMS system they have due largely to the unceasing and unflagging efforts of Frank.

My experience with Frank over the years came from my position as a pilot, flying an injured or ill person to the mainland; often in the middle of the night. Frank was always there, regardless of the hour. The aid crew often changed, but Frank was always there. Words cannot possibly fill the void left in this community by Franks' passing.

Franks' passing is indeed the end of an era, and he is a hero for our time.
