Remembering Tom Holzhauser

Dear Editor,

posted 1/30/2006
I want to extend my thanks and gratitude to everyone for your love and kindness expressed to us while dealing with my husband Tom Holzhauser’s battle with cancer and his recent journey to Heaven. Many thanks to the truly caring and devoted team in the Cancer Care Center at Island Hospital and to the kind staff at Islands Convalescent Center. You all made this last year and a half easier to bear.

I give a huge thank you to Bob and Jim, the Powells and Kathy Komonko for hosting Tom and I, and our out of town family and friends. Thanks also to those who spent time with Tom at I.C.C., so we could grab a bite to eat together, as a family. Tom loved having lots of visitors. You are all most generous.

Bill and Rita Ament , you were a blessing, being there with us when Tom passed. You made it so glorious, spiritual, peaceful and heart warming.

I thank our wonderful children for their constant love and devotion to their dad, and to our families, our long time friends, Merritt Olson &Tom’s co-workers, Theatre Board members, the CATS organization and our island friends and neighbors for all your constant love, support, visits, prayers, flowers, food, wine, letters, calls, e-mails, hugs and memorial contributions. I love you.

Barbara Holzhauser

Tom was a wonderful guy, always cheerful and willing to help. He was a genius with starters and generators and helped me out many of times when I had commercial boats. I will miss his happy face and smile...my sincere condolances go to his family, Tom will be missed but we are all better for knowing him!!

Our thoughts are with Tom's wife Barbara and family as we recall his cheerful, helpful, "can do" personality so appreciated by his many friends at Armour Food Company in Portland.

With pursed lips and a heavy heart did I read the announcement of Tom's passing. It wasn't totally unexpected, but that doesn't make it much easier to lose someone you've come to rely on and trust with any and all problems relating to the theatre. Tom was that for me. Just when I would be at wits end, pulling my hair out with some concern or another, Tom would be there, his calm and kind voice as much a tonic for my frayed nerves as his advice.

The man was gentle and unflappable beyond measure. He set an example for us all. We are greater for knowing him and lesser without him in our community. Godspeed Tom...bless and keep you.

I was saddened to see the news of Tom's passing. During the construction of the Lopez Center, Tom shared not only technical information and ideas, but encouraged us in our endeavor. His spirit represented the best of our communities. He will be missed.

I want to remember Tom (and of course his hair above his lip he was so proud of)on their boat whenever I can up to visit. He and Barb always treated us like royalty and ate too much each time. I especially remember the Pig Days celebration when my sister Lliane and I went to the Island and Tom volunteered us to help be in the parade with pig noses and clothes from the brothers store. What fun we had with joy and laughter. He is fine now but it was not time for him to take this journey and I am sad.

I've had the honor of getting to know Tom only briefly in the last 5 years or so. Working as a stage manager at the Community Theater, I would work with Tom in preperation for a show or just trying to get through all the little things that go into maintaining the stage area. I could come to Tom with any technical question, and he'd have an answer ready or would at least point me in the right direction--and there were times I truly tried to stump him! Tom was a genuinely nice guy and as Janice Pepin said, our community was fortunate to have had him. He lives on in all our memories, and I say God speed my friend.

As the former director of San Juan Recovery, I had the wonderful experience of having Tom on our Board of Directors for approximately three years. He was kind, cheerful, and very supportive in this position. He made a great deal of difference in many people's lives. He made a big difference in my life, too. I can celebrate quite a few good memories of him! Our communtiy has been fortunate to have had this time with him. My prayers to the family for their loss.

Janice Pepin
