Colonel Ross Miner

Dear Editor,

posted 08/15/06
Col. Miner is my named sake, a fact of which I am very proud. My father, Maj. J.M. Thomas, USMC ret., served proudly under Col. Miner, while stationed at Camp Pendleton in the late 60s. I met Col. Miner in 1981, in Friday Harbor, Washington. My father had described a hard-nosed leader, who represented all a Marine should be. I was blessed to meet a man of considerable strength and a indomitable character, despite his advancing years. Yet I also discovered a grandfather, gentle and generous.

My father and I spent a cool summer afternoon with Col. Miner aboard his boat, on the dark waters of the Puget Sound. The Colonel, the Major and a little boy. I quietly listen to their stories of heroes past, and their hope of peace. A memory I will long cherish.

I am proud to carry Col. Ross Miner's name.

Ross Thomas
Hartsburg, Illinois
