Remembering Patrick O'Mara

Dear Editor,

Thanks for posting the article on the fatal car accident that took the life of Pat O'Mara. I was his best friend back in the 60s and haven't seen him since high school. Pat was part of the Lincoln High Class of 1970.

Sincerely,

Paul LaVanway
Seattle,WA

Thank you from Pat O'Mara's sister

I want to thank so many of you for the care and love you showed our family during the loss of Patrick. First I want to thank the EMTs and Sheriff. You put your lives on the line to help others. It must be very hard to retrieve bodies especially when you knew the people involved.

Secondly, the people of the convalescent center. They had a wonderful wall display of my brother and had his office packed. They showed such care.

Mostly I want to thank the American Legion and the numerous people there who showed such love for Pat and care for our family.

Carol, who first contacted me and got things rolling up there and her husband Karl. I cannot thank you enough. A hug and thank you to Susan Ross who went way out of her way to be of help and comfort to us. The word thank you is just not adequate.

Thank you to those who did Pat's service. Shannon Plummer, Norm Renolds and Dave Eden. It was very touching and I am sure as difficult for you as for our family. I want to thank the American Legion for the wake after his service and the lovely flowers. I wish I could have taken some of them home.

I want to thank the brother of Pat's heart - Ray Rutlege - for all his help with Pat's estate.

Everyone on the island made us feel so welcome. If I were ever to move from the Oregon coast that is one of the places I would choose with its strong sense of community. It was very comforting. My brother was so wrapped in your love. I know even though his body was alone when he died he did not die alone. I pray that Pat knows how much you love and miss him.

Again Thank You. My heart feels so broken, but, the caring of the people of Friday Harbor did a lot to soothe it.

Our dearest Patrick, you are already missed. Although we don't have famous lives, you touched so many peoples lives in so many ways. You had a special gift and you will be truly missed. You had an honesty and love in your spirit that we will truly miss each and every day. God speed Patrick and I hope someday I can share what you meant to this community, and to me personally. I'm sorry I didn't take the time to do that before this tragic event.

Those of us at Islands Convalescent Center feel so lucky to have had Patrick in our lives. He was a dedicated co-worker not just to his daily duties but to the residents here. Over the years there were many he become close to and would have "silly little jokes with." Thumb wrestling and reminding the ladies to put their lipstick on are just a few.

Upon looking for some things in his office this week, we found three name tags he had kept of past residents he was very fond of. Our dogs will also miss the bacon pieces he would save for them from breakfast. Patrick was also a pretty good baker too, we remember many times he would come in with home made cookies and just about a month ago he made pumpkin cheesecake to share with us.

Patrick is already missed terribly by staff and residents alike. If he saw anyone in need, he would quietly do what he could to help, no matter what the need may be. He never did things for the "thank you", he did them because he had a big heart and was a dedicated friend.

I have had few really dear friends in my life. Patrick was and still is one of them. He was so kind and giving to everyone he knew. I will never forget him and will truly miss him. I thank God I was lucky enough to have had him in my life and always in my heart.

Remembering Patrick O'Mara: He was small in stature but large in heart. His voice, tho timid, carried authority and if you listend long enough you would that this was someone to be remembered. I had the honor of being his friend.
