| June 16, 2002 Greetings to the Community! I am just delighted to serve as your new superintendent. Through the interview process I learned of the communityšs dedication and commitment to its children and schools. My wife, Gayle, and I are looking forward to joining the San Juan community with our nine and ten year old sons, Tommy and Jordan. We truly appreciate how warmly we have been welcomed over the past three weeks. By now you have probably heard or read that Gayle and I are no strangers to island living and are thrilled to be Ocoming homeš to the San Juans. I spent 22 summers at YMCA Camp Orkila on Orcas and served as its executive director for five years before returning to a career in education on Mercer Island. In fact, Gayle and I met at camp and have been married for 17 years. For the past twelve years we have been living in an old family home on Vashon Island. Though my official start date is August 1st, Išll be spending several days in the next six weeks meeting with Steve Enoch and the administrative team to insure a good transition. I have had a wonderful 20 year career with the Mercer Island School District and look forward to building upon the success and excellence of the San Juan Island District. Wešll be spending the summer learning about the district and joining you in the community. See you soon. Michael Soltman | |
