Students concerned about rumors

posted 03/10/2006
Recently it has come to the attention of the Helping Out Teens Society (the Friday Harbor High School HOTS group) that some community members believe an over inflated percentage of students at our school are abusing drugs and alcohol. We do not wish the actions of a select few to represent the student body as a whole.

Our consistently high levels of achievement in both academics and sports demonstrate that these rumors are untrue. This is shown by our 95% graduation rate, the 85% of graduates who go on to higher education, and the fact that over one third of the student body is currently taking Advanced Placement classes. All of these are clear signs of students making positive choices.

We would also like to recognize the fact that our sports teams have excelled to very high levels throughout recent years at the high school.

The members of HOTS and many students at our school take offense to the accusations that assume that the entire student body is characterized by a certain type of behavior and decision-making.

HOTS, along with other community organizations, is currently working on $17000 anti-drinking and driving demonstration. This demonstration, Every 15 Minutes, will involve the direct participation of 45 members of the student body.

We are continually working to decrease drug and alcohol abuse within our school and rumors like this are discouraging.

HOTS wishes to express to the San Juan Island Community that there are many positive activities students engage in and excel at during their time at Friday Harbor High.

Sincerely,
the Helping Out Teens Society
