Impressed with Middle Schoolers

Dear Editor,

posted 04/10/2006
This year I had the opportunity to view my first middle school play "The Wind In The Willows." I know many people had the opportunity to see this play as it was completely sold out every performance. For those who missed out, don't miss out next year. I have worked as a stage manager for years here, and this was my first back stage experience with middle school kids (and even some elementary and younger kids).

Let me tell you--these kids worked as hard as any actors I've worked with. They showed a level of professionalism that was truly amazing to me. They knew their lines, they knew their blocking, they showed up on time for their cues. The costumes were amazing and some took an hour to put on. The set decoration was fabulous, and I learned was on par "for a Fred Yockers play." The amount of effort that parents put in both behind the scenes (literally) and helping with everything from snacks to full-blown meals was amazing as well. (Yes, I'm using the word amazing a lot, but it's true!)

Don't make the mistake I did in assuming that kid plays are any less than a full-theater experience. I know I won't make that mistake twice.
