Injured soldier's family thanks American Legion

Dear Editor,

posted 11/11/05
Thanks to the members of American Legion Post 163 and especially Karl Mueller, my nephew, SFC Richard Robertson and his wife will have a nest egg to help them get started with some of the renovations to make their house and car wheel chair accessible.

As you are already aware, SFC Richard (Buzz) Robertson was wounded in Iraq on August 25, 2005. He spent September and most of October in Walter Reed Military Hospital and has now been moved to a rehabilitation facility in Augusta, Georgia.

The local American Legion Post, under the guidance of Commander Karl Mueller, organized raffle drawings every Friday during the month of October with the proceeds to benefit SFC Robertson and his family. They successfully raised $6000. The check was presented to Buzz on Wednesday, Nov. 9 by the Georgia State Commander of the American Legion, Robert Ballard.

Karl Mueller has invited Buzz to come to Friday Harbor for Memorial Day in May of 2006 to be the guest speaker. Buzz thinks he can arrange that and he would be honored to do so. He said that it would give him the opportunity to say “Thank You” in person. In the mean time, all of his family wants the American Legion to know that we are grateful and that the money will help Buzz to maintain his independence by helping him adjust to life in the wheel chair.

While the amount of money is great, the depth of the sentiment that prompted this kindness is even greater and means more than we can express. The most remarkable thing about all of this is about how many people want to help and do whatever they can. God Bless America!

Minnie and Jim Knych
