Another successful Fish for Teeth clinic

PRESS RELEASE: Fish for Teeth kicked off its second year of bringing the ToothMobile to San Juan County with another successful two-day clinic, and a great batch of fish tacos prepared at Marketplace.

January 25-26 marked the fourth visit of the ToothMobile to San Juan Island (plus two visits to Lopez). Our 100% volunteer team of local dental professionals provided $15,759 worth of dental services for 28 individuals who otherwise would not have received dental care (this brings our overall total to $74,579 on 150 people in a 13-month period!).

This clinic would not have been possible without the generosity of the following dentists and their staff:

Dr. Mike Horn, Sam Horn, Barbara Foster, Lori Miller, Susie Steenkolk,

Dr. Michelle Reynolds, Jill Akins and Andrea Champlin

Dr. TeGrotenhuis and Kris Phillips

Thanks to the folks at the Mullis Center for housing our van and offering a private place for pre-screening patients.

It costs Fish For Teeth around $2,000 to bring the ToothMobile to San Juan County for a two-day clinic. Many service groups have contributed directly to this cause including Rotary, Legion Auxiliary, Soroptomists, and Lions Club of Lopez Island. In addition, we appreciate the many individuals who contribute directly to our cause. Even the “keep the change” offerings add up when we sell fish tacos!

tacosSpeaking of fish tacos, our sole fundraising event... According to our faithful patrons, last Friday’s were the “best ever!” The fish was Alaskan rockfish and Bristol Bay sockeye salmon, donated by Matt’s Fresh Fish and Peter Pan Seafoods, respectively.

Thanks go to Marketplace for letting us set up shop and cook up a storm. Another big thank you goes out to all of our loyal customers who help support Fish For Teeth through their appetite for fish tacos!

It takes a village to bring the Tooth Mobile to the island and we wouldn’t want to neglect to acknowledge the rest of those who made last weeks’ clinic possible. In no particular order of importance THANK YOU!:

Cynthia Burke - Cynthia’s Of Course, for prep and cleanup space,

Steve and Irene Herring – San Juan Coffee & Roasting for providing coffee on a cold day at the taco sale

Paul Hopkins – for always donating the tents and chairs needed for the taco sale

Tim Barrette and Laurie Paul—Market Chef for providing lunch for the dentists and their staff at the dental van

SJC Health Department and its staff, in conjunction with the Oral Health Coalition, for receiving applications and much more

Joyce Sobel - The Family Resource Center for receiving dental care applications
