A surprise for Emily
posted 02/01 br>Tom Pemberton posted signs all over town Friday inviting one and all to a surprise birthday party in honor of the "island saint Emily Reed." Reed didn't see the signs, she couldn't drive to town because her car wasn't running. Unbeknownst to her, Pemberton had disabled it.
On their way to "the movies," they stopped in at the Grange in Friday Harbor to peek at a friend's catering job. One look at Reed's face was all that was needed to know Pemberton's plans had worked -- she was surprised.
Dozens of islanders, including several of her past students, had gathered to celebrate the former high school counselor's 67th birthday.
Reed was serenaded, hugged and told how much she was loved.
