'January':
A harbinger of spring?

Matt Pranger photos

posted 02/00

Two newborn lambs in a pasture along San Juan Valley Road Monday, Jan. 31, 2000 signal spring might not be far off. Guard Sundstrom was working at San Juan County Public Works when he learned of this season's first lambs from passing motorists who phoned him and sent him e-mails. The farmer's 3-year-old niece Madden Shanks was delighted when she cuddled one of the lambs Monday evening. She named it January. "Madden wants to take it to preschool," Sundstrom said. He moved January, her sibling and mother -- "blue tag No. 11" -- into a barn. Lancelot is the proud ram.

By the end of the week, the lambs had filled out. Sunday, Feb. 6 they were up at the barn enjoying a visit from island children.
