Haiphong administrators visit Port Friday

posted 06/18/03
A delegation from Haiphong, Vietnam will arrive at the Port of Friday Harbor at 11 a.m. June 20. The visit is part of a pilot project funded by the World Bank to demonstrate the usefulness of peer assistance between advanced and developed cities. The delegation's visit to Friday Harbor will provide an opportunity for them to see an example of tourism on the water, similar to their situation in Vietnam.

Haiphong's key tourist attraction is Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Island which they want to develop further in an sustainable way. The areas of focus for peer assistance include trade, tourism, information technology/web development, and public health.

The visit to Friday Harbor has been arranged with help from John Cooper at the Bellingham/Whatcom County Convention Visitors Bureau, and Drew Schmidt at the San Juan Island Commuter who is providing complimentary tickets for delegation.

The delegation is in the Pacific Northwest June 15-23, 2003. Their meetings include City of Seattle, Ports of Seattle and Tacoma, UW, Tillicum Village, Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, Bellingham/Whatcom County Convention Visitors Bureau, and People for Puget Sound.
