Airfare specials offered this fall

posted 09/30/04
From October 15 through January 3, 2005, passengers can save $50 off roundtrip airfare between Seattle and Friday Harbor and $25 off one-way fares. Sponsored by the Port of Friday Harbor, this campaign is funded by a Department of Transportation Small Community Airport Grant. The program's goal is to increase air travel and to improve airfares available to travelers in the community.

Three airlines are participating in the fall campaign. Travelers can fly on San Juan Airlines scheduled flights or, by charter, with Island Air. Both arrive at Boeing Field, with transport available to SeaTac. Kenmore Air's seaplanes fly between the Port of Friday Harbor and Lake Union.

Tickets must be booked through Great Getaway Travel by December 15, 2004 to qualify for the discount. Please call 360-378-5600 or 800-692-3322, or e-mail .

Reduced airfares available for Seattle/San Juan Island

posted 01/12/04
The three airlines serving San Juan Island are offering $60 off a round-trip fare or $25 off a one-way ticket on the Seattle/San Juan Island route. The reduced airfares are part of the initial program under the recently awarded $350,000 Small Community Air Service Grant. The initial program covers tickets purchased between January 12 and February 15 with travel between February 1 and March 15, 2004.

To take advantage of the discounted rates, customers should contact Great Getaway Travel at 378-5600. Great Getaway is an independent travel agency located in Friday Harbor and helping to administer the initial program. Customers calling will be asked five general questions which will help the grant committee in designing future programs.

"We wanted to start with a program that would not only benefit the community, but give the committee a chance to test program implementation and gather information that will be important to subsequent programs," said Marilyn O'Connor of the Port of Friday Harbor and committee member.

The $350,000 grant was awarded to the Port of Friday Harbor in coordination with San Juan Airlines, Island Air and Kenmore Air. The grant was made possible by the contribution of $35,000 in local matching funds from the Town of Friday Harbor as recommended by the Town's Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, and aided by several letters of support from community businesses.

The goals and objectives of the grant, awarded last October by the Federal Department of Transportation, are:

  1. to increase enplanements at the Friday Harbor Airport overall, and

  2. to improve airfares available to travelers in the community.

The committee has discussed several potential projects for the spring and fall shoulder seasons. Future projects will also include encouraging air travel to San Juan Island from Seattle and Bellingham.

Committee members include representatives from the Port of Friday Harbor, the Town of Friday Harbor, the San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau, San Juan Airlines, Island Air and Kenmore Air.

$350K grant sought to assist airlines

posted 07/08/03
San Juan Airlines, Island Air and Kenmore Air working with the Port of Friday Harbor are applying for a federal Dept. of Transportation grant. The application is for $350,000 to be used for marketing and airfare improving service.

The grant requires a public/private partnership. According to Paul Hopkins, San Juan Airlines Marketing Director Paul Hopkins the partnership would contribute $35,000. The group is asking for a $30,000 contribution over two years from the Town of Friday Harbor. The town’s Lodging Tax Advisory Committee will review the request and make a recommendation to the town Council. The Council has sent a letter of endorsement regarding the grant itself.

If the grant is awarded, the funds will be allocated based on the decisions of the steering committee made up of private and public representatives. Funds used for marketing would promote air travel to and from San Juan Island.
