Port picks hangar proposal

posted 11/21/02
Friday Harbor Port Commissioners selected one of the three proposals received for construction of hangars on the south end of the Friday Harbor airport. Gary Bolster of Hangars Unlimited will build 10 hangars - two 40-foot, seven 45-foot, two 50-foot.

A proposal from Brian McGlynn and John Stevenson to build six hangars - four 60-foot and two 40-foot - was turned down. The other rejected proposal was from James Kunkel to construct seven hangars - four 70-foot and three 60-foot.

McGlynn’s proposal included two shop areas. Kunkle’s proposal included offices and sleeping space for corporate pilots. Port Commissioner Brian Calvert said, "My least favorite is the larger hangars with office space. That is not the need of the community. I’m not happy with shops and office space in the two proposals."

McGlynn and Stevenson's proposal was smaller than the other two because they limited the size to the 350 foot site mentioned in the request for proposals guidelines. The other two proposals were more than 500 feet. "If the site is 500 or 600 feet, we need to know that," said McGlynn. "We'd be happy to build to that. We went with the published specifications."

Calvert asked, "Were you not told that there was a 350 foot minimum and you had option to make it longer."

Port Director Steve Simpson said he had a conversation with McGlynn about the project size. "You could build longer if you took responsbility for the additional (excavation) costs."

McGlynn said that wasn't his understanding of the situation. Commissioner Greg Hertel said the port's decision would be based on more than the size.

Kunkle stressed the need for larger hangars for bigger aircraft. "We've built a number of corporate hangars," he said. "We propose 70' by 60' deep with side extensions for offices." He said a lot of people he had talked to wanted office space or sleeping space for corporate pilots. Several people are building homes here and want bigger hangars he said.

Commissioner Greg Hertel said he favored the smaller hangar size of the Hangars Unlimited proposal.

Commissioner Mike Ahrenius said, "The concerns I have with larger hangars are in my observation big planes come in and leave quickly. They are not the ones that stay here. I see more small twins and larger singles living here on a permanent basis. The Hanger Unlimited plan seems to fit the Friday Harbor airport long range scheme."

The commissioners unanimously agreed the port director should negotiate with Bolster.
