Port names trail after McAlpinePort of Friday Harbor commissioners, yesterday, recognized Clark McAlpine's dedication to running by naming the trail at the Friday Harbor Airport after him. "I'm totally amazed," I'm happy with it," McAlpine said after cutting ribbon at the head of the path. "It's a great little trail. I'm touched." Commissioner Brian Calvert, in a meeting earlier this fall, suggested the trail be named after McAlpine because of his contributions to running on San Juan Island. McAlpine organized a running club and coaches islanders. The trail, which started as a shortcut from the airport terminal to upper Spring Street, skirts the northeast end of the airport and continues out to the Skagit Valley College San Juan Center. Airport Manager Pat Mayo started the path and others, including Boy Scouts, helped finish it. The trail traverses a variety of terrain, including woods and pavement. McAlpine said the trail is another example of the Port's commitment to the San Juan Island, that the "the Port is involved in more than planes and boats." |
