Port offers deal to reel in more boaters

With a significant drop in visiting mariners so far this year, the Port of Friday is attempting to attract more transient boaters. Port commissioners yesterday, July 24, 2002 approved giving transient moorage users a fifth night free.

Mariners used to have to stay seven consecutive nights to receive a free night. Under the new "punch card" plan, boaters earn a free night if they stay four nights any time during the summer.

This year's boat nights will lag last year's by an estimated 1,700 by the end of this month. That's forced Harbormaster Tami Hayes to cut summer workers' hours. She distributed a report that showed "how really quiet it is."
