The Port of Friday Harbor is home to more artwork. Matthew Gray Palmer's sculpture "Popeye" was unveiled Saturday, April 16, 2005 in Fairweather Waterfront Park. The statue honors the official seal of the Port of Friday Harbor. Popeye, a one-eyed seal, can frequently be seen at the port marina near the Friday Harbor Seafood float. The Temcov Foundation donated money for the sculpture.

Port of Friday Harbor Commissioners selected San Juan Island sculptor Matthew Palmer as the artist for the "Popeye" sculpture project. The life-size granite sculpture will be placed on port property. Palmer was one of six artists who responded to the port's request for proposals.

Port Director Steve Simpson said proposed artwork is more than staff expected for the $4,000 to $6,000 budget. He said, "We have quite a number of world class artists who are willing to do something that goes on display in their home town at a bargain rate." The Temcov Foundation and the Port of Friday Harbor are funding the project.

The port wanted a sculpture which would "create a connection to "Popeye" a one-eyed female seal that frequents the Port of Friday Harbor Marina near the Friday Harbor Seafood float. Popeye enjoys watching people and often waves a flipper to passersby. People often come to Friday Harbor just to see Popeye."

Port Commissioners made Popeye, the one-eyed seal, the official seal of the Port of Friday Harbor earlier this year.
