Resurfaced runway ready

Planes can land on Friday Harbor Airport's freshly resurfaced runway beginning this morning. Since the one million dollar project began April 30, pilots have been landing on the airport's taxiway. To avoid confusion the lighted Xs which have been used to mark the closed runway have been moved to the taxiway.

The project isn't finished. Grooving of the runway will take place in June. Neighbors will be notified prior to the start of the work. The machinery used to groove the runway emits noise measured at 120 decibels at 2000 feet.

Resurfacing will limit airport operations

Two large, lighted X's will mark the ends of Friday Harbor Airport beginning April 30 for three to four weeks. The runway will be resurfaced and the airport will be open for daylight VFR operation only. The lighted markings let pilots know the runway is closed.
