Wooden Boat Center interested in San Juan Island

The Center for Wooden Boats is interested in establishing an out-station on San Juan Island according to Les Gunther. The center in Seattle is a hands on maritime museum created to preserve the small craft heritage by preserving both the artifacts and the maritime skills. The San Juan Island resident discussed the idea with the Port of Friday Harbor at the Jan. 9,2002 port meeting. "I've told County Commissioner Darcie Nielsen about it and she'd jumping out of her shoes with enthusiasm."
The commissioners were open to the idea but noted they did not want to push out any of their present tenants.
Port Director Steve Simpson said the waterfront property that is being adquired from the gravel pit might be a good location.
Port Auditor Marilyn O'Connor said the Sailing Foundation Board is interested in community efforts to provide a small sailing center.
